They’re not naturally aggressive, but their protective instincts do kick in when needed, they may bark to alert you to something unfamiliar, though they’re friendly once introduced. They get along well with other pets and are usually happiest when included in daily routines and not left on their own for too long. Overall, an Old English Sheepdog brings a mix of gentleness, loyalty, and humor that’s hard not to fall in love with.

Appropriate feeding of an Old English Sheepdog is essential for their long-term health and well-being. As a large breed, they require a well-balanced, high-quality diet that supports joint development, digestion, coat health, and steady energy levels. Formulas designed for large breeds or active dogs often suit them well.

OES' can be prone to weight gain if overfed, especially once they move past their energetic puppy years. Treats are great for training, but they should be used in moderation to avoid unnecessary weight gain.

You may be surprised to learn that the iconic shaggy OES coat does not shed overly much! However, there’s no getting around it, grooming is a big part of life with an Old English Sheepdog, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to bond with your dog.

Their lush, double coat is part of what makes them so iconic, but it does require regular care to stay clean, healthy, and mat-free. Most OES' will need to be brushed thoroughly at least once a week, though some need more frequent brushing depending on coat texture and lifestyle. Without this regular brushing, their coat can develop tight mats that are uncomfortable and sometimes painful, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail. Many owners will also opt for a professional groom every 5–8 weeks.

In addition to coat care, regular grooming should include ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental hygiene. Their ears are floppy and can be prone to infection if not kept clean and dry. Grooming may feel like a big job at first, but once a routine is established, it can become an enjoyable experience for both of you. With patience, positive reinforcement, and the right tools, it turns into a bonding ritual that your Sheepdog will come to enjoy, or at least tolerate!

Old English Sheepdogs might look like couch potatoes, but they do need regular, varied exercise to stay physically fit and mentally sharp. They’re not hyperactive, but they’re not lazy either, especially as puppies! A daily routine that includes a couple of walks, a bit of free play, and some mental stimulation (Kong toys, lick mats, food puzzles, etc) will keep them happy and well-behaved.

Originally bred for herding and working alongside humans, the OES enjoys having a purpose. This could be anything from a fun backyard game to light agility or scent work. They particularly love engaging activities that let them use their brains and bodies in tandem. That said, they’re also quite happy with a relaxing stroll followed by a nap in the shade.

As with any animal, be mindful of their comfort in hotter conditions where their thick coats may make them prone to overheating. Always ensure they have access to shade and water. Puppies and young dogs may need a bit more structured exercise to help burn off energy, while seniors will benefit from gentler movement to keep joints moving but not overloaded. A well-exercised Sheepdog is a calm and content one! Keeping their bodies moving and minds engaged helps prevent boredom, which can lead to destructive behavior or a few cheeky antics around the house!

Old English Sheepdogs are smart, eager to please, and full of personality... all excellent qualities when it comes to training. They respond best to positive reinforcement techniques utilising praise, treats, and play. Harsh methods or shouting won’t get you far with this breed; they thrive under patient, gentle guidance and a clear, consistent routine. Start training early and they’ll grow into strong, independent adults.

Early socialization is key, as it helps them acclimatize and learn how to behave in new environments and interact confidently with people, animals, and unfamiliar sounds or objects. Puppy preschool and beginner obedience classes can be especially helpful in laying a strong foundation.

While they’re quick learners, OES' can also be a bit stubborn and cheeky and may test boundaries or become distracted if training feels too repetitive. Keep sessions short, fun, and varied to hold their attention. Because they form such close bonds with their humans, these dogs do best when included in everyday activities and routines. Training is equally about building a relationship based on trust and respect as it is about obedience. When that bond is strong, your Old English Sheepdog will be a loyal and willing partner, whether you’re walking in the park or curled up on the couch.
